Berlin city





Berlin is the capital of the Federal Republic of Germany since 1994. Previously the eastern city was the capital of the German Democratic Republic from the years 1949 - 1990 and the capital of the united German state from 1871 to 1945. The city is now (2007) has a population of about 3.5 million inhabitants, making it the second largest city in the European Union after London.

From the years 1961 - 1989 Berlin town separated by the Berlin Wall. Western part; West Berlin occupied by West Germany while the eastern part; East Berlin dominated by East Germany.

In addition to a city, Berlin is also one of 16 federal states of Germany, which serves as a center of politics of the European Union, as well as the busiest metropolis in Europe. The city is also used as a traffic center of economic activity, culture, and education in Germany. Some institutions such as universities, research institutes, theaters and museums located in this city.
